Accommodations Process for Students

Rock Valley College students may request accommodations for an academic year or for a temporary period through Disability Support Services.

Academic Year Accommodations

  1. Complete the online DSS Application
  2. Provide documentation to help us understand your needs. If you had/have an IEP or 504 Plan from high school, that should be all we need for documentation. However, if you have a diagnosis of a disability NOT on your IEP/504 Plan OR if you do not currently have documentation, please have your medical provider complete the Disability Verification Form. They can either email or fax it to us directly OR send it back to you, and you can upload, email, or submit a hard copy of the form.
  3. Once your application and documentation are received, a member of the DSS team will reach out to you to schedule a Welcome Meeting.

Temporary Accommodations

If you have a temporary injury (i.e. broken bone, concussion), or require accommodations due to pregnancy, please complete these steps:

  1. Complete the online DSS Application
  2. Upload documentation that confirms your temporary injury (such as a doctor's visit summary, a photograph of your cast, etc.).
  3. Once your application and documentation are received, a member of the DSS team will reach out to you to schedule a Welcome Meeting.

Next Steps

During your Welcome Meeting, you and the Accommodations Specialist will discuss:

  • Any disability-related barriers you may be experiencing in your academics,
  • The accommodations that would best address those barriers, and
  • How to set up accommodations in your classes.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 are all federal laws that protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination on the basis of disability, and ensure equal participation in an institution’s programs and activities. The provision of academic adjustments, or accommodations, is one way in which students obtain equal participation.
