English as a Second Language

The ESL (English as a Second Language) program can help you improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Our classes range from providing basic language skills for beginners to helping advanced students prepare for higher education, training, or a career.

Enrollment for ESL classes will reopen on July 1, 2024. Please complete the application for ESL classes in the fall semester and select a test date for your required reading assessment. Openings are available on a first-come basis. Please select "ESL (Adult Education)" as the type of application.

ESL Program

Students attending ESL classes become part of a caring community of support.

The curriculum used in the Rock Valley College ESL program is founded on the English Language Proficiency standards, and it is integrated with the Common Core & College Readiness standards. ESL instructors are trained in lesson planning and development. They participate in regular ongoing trainings specific to adult education to ensure students receive the best possible learning experience.

Students attending ESL classes come from a wide variety of culture and language backgrounds. Typically, there are more than fifty countries represented in the Rock Valley College ESL program, and more than 40 languages represented.

Classes are held at varying times and at numerous locations throughout the community. Classes meet 3-4 days per week, 2.5 hours per day.

Enrollment opportunities are typically offered in July, October, and December/January. During open enrollment sessions, the application will be found on the Rock Valley College website. Prospective students take a reading assessment and are placed in the appropriate class.

Tuition Fully Covered

All ESL classes are free to students.
