Canvas Outage Updates
Update: 5/8 at 2:13 PM
As an added precaution, all students and employees must reset their passwords. You will be prompted to reset your password upon your next login including reauthorization through multi-factor authentication (MFA).
For instructions on how to reset your password, please visit the Technology Services page.
Update: 5/8 at 11:28 AM
At this time, Canvas has been restored. Instructure, the company that provides Canvas, has confirmed that a cybersecurity incident has impacted the platform. RVC leadership, Information Technology, and Academic Affairs are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to communicate updates through college channels (RVC-email, website, and social media).
While Canvas is currently up and running, we encourage members of the RVC community to be cautious of attackers who may try to take advantage of this incident.
Change Your Password
As an added precaution, all students and employees must reset their passwords. You will be prompted to reset your password upon your next login including reauthorization through multi-factor authentication (MFA).
If you have questions about resetting your password, you can stop by the open lab in WTC on the Main Campus, or you can call (815) 921-4800 or email RVC-IT-HelpDesk@RockValleyCollege.edu.
Be Aware of Phishing Attacks
We do want you to know that scammers like to use security incidents like this to get to you and your information. Over the next few weeks, expect to see phishing emails impersonating Canvas, Instructure, or college IT staff. Always review the sender of the email to ensure the email address is not fraudulent. Be alert for messages that:
- Ask you to re-verify your Canvas login or college credentials
- Claim your account(s) have been compromised and prompt you to click a link
- Request urgent account actions from addresses that resemble, but are not, official college domains
- Include unexpected password reset requests you did not initiate
If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, do not click on any links. Real Canvas emails come from @instructure.com. Real RVC emails come from @rockvalleycollege.edu. Anything else is suspect. If a message threatens you or rushes you, that's the warning sign. Slow down.
If you receive an email that appears to be related to this incident or looks suspicious, report it immediately by using the Report Phish option in college email. NOTE: If you are ever unsure whether a message is spam or malicious phish, you can always report it for analysis.
Incident Updates
Only trust communications from the official sources regarding this incident. Emails sent from the college will use the official @RockValleyCollege.edu.
Update: 5/7 at 5:15 PM
Planned Outage: May 22 - June 1, 2026
The current version of Ellucian Colleague does not scale well long-term. Therefore, Ellucian has required all of its customers to migrate to SaaS.
SaaS is an acronym for Software as a Service. Meaning, rather than systems being installed/hosted locally, they are accessed online with a cloud service provider. This makes products easier to use, update, and scale according to the needs of an organization.
In order to fully migrate all of RVC’s Colleague Ellucian systems to SaaS, we will experience a system outage beginning on Friday, May 22 at 5 pm and coming back online by noon on Monday, June 1.
Update: May 22 - June 1, 2026
Systems Impacted
- Ellucian Colleague
- Self Service
- Intranet Apps (Budget Transfer Request, Account Provisioning)
Systems Not Impacted
- Single Sign-On
- Password Reset
- Canvas
