RVC Professor Awarded Grant to Preserve Rockford Education Desegregation Stories

Dr. Mathew Oakes has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Grant for a two-year oral history, archival, and instructional project on the legal and community history of desegregation and education in Rockford. The $60,000 grant will fund his project, “Chronicles of Change: Archiving Stories of Desegregation in Rockford Public Schools, 1989-2002.”

I say unofficially diagnosed because when I was a student there were no disability laws or educational supports. The first incarnation of the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) was passed in 1975. I graduated from high school in 1973.

Molly Sides, Professor of English, has been honored as the 32nd recipient of the Rock Valley College Faculty of the Year award. Sides was presented the award during the college’s virtual faculty development session on April 1.
