Jaliyah Lopez Jonelis: Balancing Ballet, College, and a Future in Physical Therapy

While still in high school, Jaliyah Lopez Janelis is making the most of her time at Rock Valley College as a Running Start student, taking advantage of the opportunity to get a head start on her college experience.

Jaliyah is working toward an Associate of Science degree to become a physical therapist specializing in working with athletes and ballet dancers.

Ballet has been a central part of Jaliyah's life since she started practicing at three years old. Knowing the physicality involved in a dance career, she became intrigued by the profession of helping dancers and athletes. She trains at the Rockford Dance Company and works five to six days to master her craft. She plans to go to Orlando for a five-week ballet training program this summer.

Beyond academics and dance commitments, Jaliyah is actively involved in campus life. She is a member of the Campus Activities Board (CAB), where she enjoys participating in planning and attending events with friends. "Being part of the Campus Activities Board has been such a fun experience," she said. "I love the events, and I'm considering taking on a leadership role next semester."

Jaliyah admits that juggling between high school and college coursework is challenging, but she credits her huge support system at home, especially her mother, for helping her stay motivated and on track. She has also picked up better study habits since coming to RVC. "In high school, I was a procrastinator and didn't study," she admitted. "Coming to RVC, I was scared because I knew I needed to focus more. But the environment here pushed me to take studying seriously, and now I enjoy preparing for tests."

Professor Julienne Jackson, who has taught Jaliyah ballet and has known her since she was eight years old said, “I have also taught Jaliyah ballet and pointe at the Rockford Dance Company over these last 10 years. I have watch Jaliyah develop her ballet technique through the many levels at the Rockford Dance Company and is now a very strong RDC Company member. She has accomplished many lead roles over the years. Jaliyah understands commitment, dedication, perseverance, and teamwork to reach higher goals in excellence.”

Jaliyah relies on her planner to stay organized, a habit she has successfully maintained throughout the semester. She also uses campus resources like MATLAB and Chemistry tutors. "The tutors are lifesavers," she said. "I also love all the quiet spots around campus where I can study. My favorite study spot is the library's first floor, all the way in a corner with high tables and large windows. I love it so much."

For Jaliyah, dance is not just a hobby but a lifelong commitment, which she wants to continue while also continuing her education and pursuing a career in physical therapy. "I would love to continue dancing and see where it takes me," she said.

For students considering RVC, Jaliyah has one piece of advice: "Definitely do it. Some hesitate because RVC is a community college, but you get the same education at a lower cost. In the end, it's not such a big deal where you get your degree as long as you have it."

Reflecting on her experience at RVC, Jaliyah is grateful for the opportunities and flexibility the college offers. "I was hesitant to leave my high school because I thought I would miss out on the high school experience. But I realized that's not true; RVC has its events, and I prefer them here. I love that I have more flexibility in my schedule. Instead of sitting in class for seven hours straight, I get to manage my own time and focus on what truly matters."
