For Kenyatta Henderson, college was more than classes and credits. At Rock Valley College, she discovered a community that helped her grow as an educator, a business owner, and as a person.

 

Kenyatta chose RVC for its online course offerings and the welcoming environment she sensed from the start. “I wanted to be comfortable and continue my education with no restrictions. I needed to be around people that care and have the same determination and love for children and people as I do,” she shares. Earning her associate’s degree in early childhood education was a personal milestone, but it was the journey filled with challenges, support, and growth that truly shaped her experience.

For Kenyatta, flexibility was essential. Running a daycare from her home meant her days were already full, and she needed a program that fit her life. With RVC offering a mix of hybrid, and online courses, Kenyatta was able to choose hybrid classes, which allowed her to pursue her degree without sacrificing her other commitments. Support from the TRIO program for students with disabilities also helped her succeed along the way. 

Obstacles were part of the journey. Kenyatta faced anxiety about collaborating with others and worried if her disability would prevent her from completing internship hours or fully participating in class. But the support she found at RVC made all the difference. “With a lot of prayer and encouragement and support from many others and Alex Luft, I was assured that I would be just fine, and he made sure that I made it across the stage to receive my degree.

By physically being there with me when I did. I truly learned what empathy for others and true dedication looks and feels like from some of the most amazing people.”

Kenyatta’s professors noticed her commitment and the impact she had on those around her. Isabel Cano, Early Childhood Education Program Coordinator, recalls visiting Kenyatta’s daycare: “Kenyatta demonstrates the passion and dedication that early childhood educators need. As an in-home childcare provider, she creates a safe and nurturing environment for our community’s youngest learners while meeting the individual needs of each child and family. It is inspiring to see Kenyatta apply what she learned in her coursework directly to her own in-home program with such commitment.”

Kenyatta’s professors describe her as a tireless worker, dedicated to her childcare business, family, and education, and always eager to learn and grow. “She’s been an asset to our program and an advocate for the families she serves,” says Dr. Mary Flynn. “Kenyatta always presents herself as a learner, striving to grow as an educator,” adds Sara Alesandrini. Dr. Tamera Foley also recalls, “Kenyatta was a very good student. She communicated her needs and asked questions when she wanted additional information. I enjoyed having her in class.”

Now, as a graduate, Kenyatta plans to continue operating her daycare and pursue a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, with a focus on working with children with disabilities. Her advice to others considering RVC is simple but powerful: “Don’t ever let go of your dreams and aspirations. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what anyone thinks or feels, it’s all about you and giving yourself the chance to be the best version of yourself. Never accept the words ‘I can’t’ that is never an option.”

Reflecting on her time at RVC, Kenyatta says, “I have gained another family and many new friends. Becoming a part of RVC has changed my life. The opportunities are endless and rewarding.”
