About the Program

The Rock Valley College Mass Communication program provides those who are interested in a career in the media industry with a unique opportunity to jump-start their education. With state-of-the-art facilities and instructors who are working media professionals, our students learn in a hands-on environment that is as “real world” as it gets.

What can I do with this degree?

Potential Careers & Wages

Many of our alumni are already enjoying a great career in journalism, television, film, and radio. Some join the workforce right after their time at RVC, others do so after continuing their studies at top schools such as the University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University, the University of Missouri, DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago, Southern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, and more.

Program Pathways

Students should meet with an Academic Advisor to develop a clear pathway leading to a seamless transfer experience or transition to the workforce. For additional possibilities that may require an advanced degree or certification, make an appointment with an Academic Advisor.

Inside Mass Com

More than a community of learners, our program provides a place where you can find a real sense of belonging and develop your craft.

Graduates of our 32-credit Media Production Specialist Certificate Program (3950) are prepared to produce a wide range of media projects including: multi-format television programs, commercials, public service announcements, documentaries, short narrative films, podcasts, and audio programs.

Students are encouraged to meet with the Academic Chair to ensure a seamless pathway through the Mass Communication program and certificates.

Graduates of our 32-credit Multimedia Journalist Certificate Program are prepared to write and produce a wide range of media projects including: news articles, public service announcements, documentaries, TV news reports, public relations campaigns, and podcasts.

Students are encouraged to meet with the Academic Chair to ensure a seamless pathway through the Mass Communication program and certificates.

The pilot program launched in January 2022 to train individuals to work on TV or film sets in Illinois, specifically outside the city of Chicago. Illinois is losing opportunities to bring film production to areas outside the city due to a lack of skilled production talent. The Illinois FIlm Office has teamed up with RVC to increase the number of skilled labor to address a workforce shortage outside of Chicago.

Students will learn:

  • An introduction to the film industry,
  • How to be a production assistant,
  • And will get assistance with career coaching and creating their resume.
