Turning Incarceration into New Opportunity
Kyle Holliday’s journey at Rock Valley College is more than just getting an education; it’s about redemption, hope, and starting over.
Kyle Holliday is working with the WEI program to take CNC courses at RVC ATC in Belvidere.
When Kyle was incarcerated, he reached a turning point. He knew he didn’t want his past to define his future. Instead of giving up, he made a promise to himself: to focus on becoming someone he could be proud of.
When he was released from jail, Kyle chose Rock Valley College because he saw it as a place where he could start fresh, a place that believed in growth and second chances. For him, Rock Valley was more than just a college; it was a path to a new life, with people who wanted to see him succeed. Reflecting on why he chose Rock Valley College, Kyle said, “I attended RVC for the betterment of my life. To get stable and find a career to actually live and not feel like I’m dying to live. To find a positive purpose to strive and succeed in life.”
Kyle’s academic path led him to the CNC program. He shared that GED instructor John Lindblade was a huge part as to why he chose the program. “He was my GED teacher when I was in the Winnebago County Jail. He encouraged me to keep going no matter how many times I failed.” When Kyle was in jail, he signed up for the GED program through John Lindblade. He had his ups and downs, but after being released, he enrolled in John’s GED class taught at the Mulford location for the math test and graduated. When he was incarcerated, he told himself he had to change. He couldn’t keep doing what he had been doing, so he changed his mindset.
Kyle reflected on his journey to graduation. “My graduation ceremony was something, and when I was in jail facing time, going to court, I kept failing tests, stressed out, but prevailed.” He also credited RVC with providing the guidance and motivation he needed to succeed. “From graduating for my GED, from me dropping out in 7th grade, RVC had changed my whole life with their support, motivation, and push to encourage me to do better. It has truly given me a new light and purpose to succeed,” Kyle said. He acknowledged the challenges he faced along the way, including personal struggles and adapting to new expectations. “I’ve dealt with a lot of pain, heartache, mental strain, a lot of adjustments and adaptations in my journey. My GED teacher John Lindblade, Erica and Bianca from WEI, and my CNC teacher, have all believed in me and I’m on my way to change my whole life around.”
Rock Valley staff were quick to recognize Kyle’s dedication. Lori Romero, GED coordinator said, “Kyle is a very special student and is dear to my heart. The main thing that stands out about Kyle is his perseverance! Kyle Holliday’s journey as a student is a true testament to unwavering perseverance and top-tier dedication. His fresh start in life isn’t just inspiring; it’s a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to rise up, rebuild, and thrive!”
John Lindblade shared a similar sentiment. “Kyle was always optimistic, and even when the work frustrated him, he never gave up,” he said. “The only time I ever saw him doubt himself was after his final test. It was a cold, rainy day, and Kyle called me from the testing center, disappointed because his score hadn’t posted yet. Then, by chance, my coordinator, Lori Romero, called to say how excited she was to see Kyle graduate. He had done it! When I told him, you could hear the relief in his voice. After I congratulated him, he asked, ‘What’s the next step?’ That’s Kyle. He took a small moment to celebrate his achievement, then focused on his next goal. He worked with the transitions team through the ICAPS training program, and I wish every student had his work ethic.”
Looking forward, Kyle's focused on setting himself up for long-term success. He said, “My plans are to grow and further my education. Get my bachelor’s degree and associate degree someday and to have a successful career.” Kyle Holliday’s story shows that it’s never too late to turn your life around. He worked hard, stayed focused, and never gave up, even when things were tough. With help from people who believed in him, Kyle was able to change his life for the better. His story shows that with determination and support; anyone can reach their goals.
For anyone seeking a purpose or a drive, or who feels lost in life and feels like it’s over, it’s not. There’s hope, and RVC can change your life and will help you.
