BURPEE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY began as a Works Progress Administration project of the 1930's. Burpee is a natural history museum specializing in paleontology, geology, biology and Native American life. Burpee has partnered with Rock Valley College Whiz Kids to offer educational content in a exciting and fun way! Bring your adventurous, exploring curiosity and we'll provide the opportunities to use them.  All classes will be taught by Burpee Museum Instructors and will held at the Burpee Museum located at 737 N. CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOPS FOR AGES 6-9
These workshops are based on Activities Integrating Mathematics and Science curriculum produced by the National Science Foundation.

WORKSHOP:
Water AwarenesWater
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Students will make predictions as to the percentages of salt and fresh water found on the earth and compare their estimates with actual percentages. They will study the structure of the water molecule.
WIZ 811 BMU2   Burpee Staff            $16
9/26          Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

WORKSHOP:
All Bottled Up
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Students will study surface tension of water. They will graph the capacities of four different bottles, predicting and observing the various volumes of water held by each.
WIZ 811 BMU4         Burpee Staff                  $16
10/10                     Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

WORKSHOP:
Water Cycle
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Students will create a mini water cycle to understand the processes of evaporation and condensation.
WIZ 811 BMU6         Burpee Staff                  $16
10/24                     Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

WORKSHOP:
Evaporation - Pond Today, Meadow Tomorrow
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Physical and biological processes interact to produce changes in the environment. Students will determine if the amount of surface area will affect the evaporation rate of liquids.
WIZ 811 BMU9         Burpee Staff                  $16
11/7                       Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

GrassWORKSHOP:
Water Conservation - Drip Drop, Flip Flop
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Ways of conserving water will be identified. Students will measure the amount of water wasted when allowing a spigot to run until the water gets warm.
WIZ 811 BMU10  Burpee Staff                  $16
11/21                 Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

WORKSHOP:
Water Treatment - That Settles It
(Ages 6-9) Hands-on Science with the museum as the student’s laboratory. Here is a class of experiments that simulate settling and filtration, important components of water treatment. The class culminates with an activity that simulates the steps in the water treatment process.
WIZ 811 BMU12       Burpee Staff                  $16
12/12                     Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

CLASSES FOR AGES 10 & UP
The classes will use the resources available in the Museum’s collections. A year of Geoscience Labs. The labs qualify for high school credit. Students will make a rock collection. They should begin collecting in September and October when the weather is good. Suggestions and materials will be given for recording the source of their specimens. Students will participate in Earth Science Week activities at the museum.

CLASS:
Exploring the Earthwhiz kids explore
(Ages 10 & Up) Students will study matter, the phases of matter and the interaction of matter and energy. They will use land images to measure the area flooded by the Mississippi River.
WIZ 811 BMU  Burpee Staff                  $16
9/19               Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

CLASS:
The Structure of Matter
(Ages 10 & Up) Elements, compounds, mixtures, properties of matter including mass and density form the core of this class. Students will find the mass and density of various specimens.
WIZ 811 BMU3         Burpee Staff                  $16
10/3                       Th 2:00-4:00 pm   1 Session

CLASS:
Problem Solving in Geo Science
(Ages 10 & Up) Students will explore early geoscience theories and their respective scientists. They will examine topographic maps and make a profile from the topographic map.
