           CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS


For renewal of an Illinois massage therapy license you must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years starting with your second renewal period. All courses given by NCBTMB-approved providers or by state approved massage schools/programs will meet this requirement. Educational programs used to fulfill this requirement must be an organized education experience directly related to massage therapy, which is offered under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. These may be experiential learning, theoretical or research in nature. Illinois Continuing Education Requirements: Massage Therapist: 24 hours biennially Special Requirements: 2 hours in ethics National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) Requirements: 48 hours of continuing education (CE) every four years. Six of the 48 hours must be taken in ethics. American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) membership renewal:a member is required to complete 48 hours of continuing education every 4 years. The first time you will have to complete those hours is by the end of your fifth year of Professional status.

Ethics for Massage Therapists
This course gives practitioners a standard of professional conduct. These standards are necessary to protect both the massage therapist and the patient and to promote effective healing. The course covers communication techniques, boundaries between clients and therapists, therapeutic relationships and psychological terms. This six-hour course is an amalgam of lecture, discussion and participation geared to produce wellness professionals who are aware of and operating in accordance with a crucial ethical system. 6 CE hours for Massage Therapists.

Trigger Point Therapy
(.5 Credits) Students will develop an understanding of trigger point therapy and learn how to identify and release trigger points to break cycles of spasms and pain.
