Exploring Healthcare Career Programs - An Overview 

This overview is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This informational session will give prospective students information and details on the Dental Assisting, Pharmacy technician, Medical Administrative Assistant Medical Billing and Coding, EKG Technician and Clinical Medical Assistant programs. In addition; the new on-line components will be discussed. Course content, job outlook, certification requirements and financial assistance information will be provided. It is recommended that you attend this free session before registering for any of the courses.

Medical Assistant Administration Program
This 70-hour course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Medical Administrative Assistants, Medical Secretary, and Medical Records Clerks are all positions in great demand. This program covers important background information on the medical assisting profession and interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management and management of practice finances. This program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that they can gain the necessary skills required to either obtain an administrative medical assistant position.  Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. The CMAA exam will be given following the completion of this course for an additional charge. There is no job placement for this course. All materials are included in the course cost.

Clinical Medical Assistant Program 
140 hours Classroom + (160 hours clinical) This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare.  This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.  Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures and the technical aspects of phlebotomy and the use of the electrocardiograph (EKG) machine. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, EKG, pharmacology, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a 40 hour clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare service provider for those students who qualify.  To be eligible for the 40 hour clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements.

*Note:  Upon successful completion of this program (both 140 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical training), students would be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. NOTE: This program is not a state accredited Certified Medical Assistant program (which is typically a 1-2 year degree program) and you are not qualified to take the Certified Medical Assistant exam (CMA).

Dental Assisting Program
Dental assist
The 60 hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – Dental Assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice.  This course covers the following key areas and topics – Administrative Aspects include: the history of dentistry and dental assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry; policies and guidelines.  Clinical Aspects include: introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment, introduction to tooth structure; primary and permanent teeth; the oral cavity and related structures; proper patient positioning; dental hand-pieces; sterilization; and other areas.  In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program.  There is no state or national certification objective with this course.

Medical Billing and Coding Program
(5 Credits) This combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.  The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements.  Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS).  After obtaining the practical work experience (6months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)  - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams

EKG Technician Certification
(3 Credits) This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing.  Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.

Pharmacy Technician
(3 Credits) This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s  PTCB exam.  Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings – working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.  Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

Healthcare Provider – CPR
This course is provided for students who do not have a current healthcare provider CPR card and are registered in EKG Technician or Clinical Medical Assistant. (CPR is given in the Dental Assisting class at an additional charge.) Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a two-year certification in CPR through the American Heart Association. Tuition includes cost of pocket mask (required). Optional text sold at class for approx. $15. You must bring your registration slip with you to class.

Quick & Easy Medical Terminology
(1.5 credits) Quickly master the basics of medical terminology and begin speaking and writing terms almost immediately! You’ll focus on actively building a working vocabulary of the most frequently encountered suffixes, prefixes and word roots. Terms are introduced in the context of human anatomy and physiology giving the student the tools needed for clear, efficient communication in the healthcare environment. You’ll be amazed at how easily medical terminology becomes a part of your vocabulary! This program is appropriate for students looking to learn new job skills, refresh or refine existing healthcare knowledge or improve performance by possessing a better understanding of medical terms.
